There was a stage in my life where the top 250 list on IMDb was gospel and I wasn’t interested in watching any film deemed lower than 7.8/10. That was two weeks ago, but I am now changing my ways and trying out movies that I looked down upon previously, beginning with Michael Bay’s collection.
Born in Los Angeles during the 60s, Bay was destined to become a blockbuster director. His first experience with stunts began as a child when he attached fireworks to a toy train and filmed it using his Mum’s camera. This enthusiasm rocketed him to an internship with George Lucas aged 15 on Raiders of The Lost Ark, a production he deemed terrible until it was released, then it became his inspiration. Starting his directorial career with adverts and music videos to critical acclaim, he attracted the attention of producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson for the project Bad Boys, turning out a huge box office success. 27 years later, his 15th picture Ambulance (the LA highlighted on the poster to specify the location) comes out in cinemas April 8th, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Before then, I will be taking a look through his filmography, finding the formula to Bay’s big paydays but low scores.
